The realistic path for someone working a job

Most of our students are working full time and moving in the evenings. Ten hours of study a week puts the 60-hour course at about six weeks and the 30-hour course at three. Add exam scheduling and paperwork and you are looking at three to four months, which is the honest average.

The three things that add weeks

Nobody plans for these, and they are almost always what makes the difference between a two-month and a five-month timeline.

• —Exam availability. Test centers book out, and popular slots in metro areas go first. Schedule the moment you finish the 60-hour course rather than after you feel ready.
• —The background check. Fingerprint results are not instant, and anything on your record that needs review adds time on the Commission's side.
• —Finding a broker. Your license cannot go active without a principal broker to hold it. Start interviewing firms while you are still in class, not after.
